It is a comical play with music and a doomsday-oratorio at the same time. It brings in a lightsome, tearful entertainment, presenting a mournful picture of the era. It is a snowy paper-comedy and an unexposed criticism of our society. The small fry’s laugh, the guillotine-shears whimper on the grindstone. It is a peachy and clumsy, comical dance performance, the humiliated one’s microphones-shuffling. It is Opera Ultima which means Final Opera. “The authority hates people, people hate authority, and both of them hate culture” ̶  says one of the characters at the beginning of the play. “If our existence means only this, we better not even exist” ̶  sings the whole company during the ending scene. The show looks like a virtuoso game of theatre genres, yet growing into a powerful political theatre performance. It is a dark opera which presents the way we can create an opera with a dramatic company if the authorities force us.

 Kata Gyarmati & Kokan Mladenovici
The artists from Novi Sad knead the classics into a black and a white act: the first part is a Rossini-parody, the second part is a dark musical based on The Marriage of Figaro. The production represents Serbia nowadays, the theatre’s social status, it might remind us of Robert Wilson’s Woyzeck, and it is more of a Brecht’s political theatre or his plays with music than a light folk songs’ night. In Mladenovici’s hands Beaumarchais’s plays do not represent the social welfare as a kitschy cultural proclamation but become a rebellious theatrical material. The system is so damaged that it would be a waste of time to repair it. The changes have to be made with great rage and passion – says the director, who used to be the manager of the Atelje 212 Theatre from Belgrade. Opera Ultima is popular and seems to be successful at transborder as well. In 2014 Opera Ultima won an award for Best Performance of the year at the National Theatre Festival – POSzT.
